Birthday Score!

A birthday bonanza of '80s horror paperbacks! Hit Powell's Books in downtown Portland today after a lovely birthday brunch with my wife (who found Monster in their Nautical Fiction section, of course). Really looking forward to Girl in a Swing, but I spent the afternoon drinking mimosas and re-re-re-re-reading this first paperback edition of Danse Macabre.

  1. And now you can honestly say 'Mea Tulpa.'

  2. Happy birthday! :) Nothing better for a birthday than books. And hopefully some cake. Yep, Danse Macabre is one of those books I don't even pick up unless I have a couple of hours free, because I know it's not getting put down again 'til I've browsed the hell out of it. I wish King would write a sequel. That's my favorite book of his, along with _On Writing_.

  3. Will, tell me, what is the title of the book in between Johnstone and Williamson? Oh, and happy belated birthday.

  4. That's BORDERLANDS 4 from White Wolf, 1995, with Dave McKean cover art...

  5. You know, I've never read a John Coyne novel, though he was one of the Names back in the horror boom days. Probably should remedy that one of these days, see if he lives up to the yesteryear hype.

He's authoring golf books now, if memory serves.

  6. 'Girl on A Swing' is.....dumb. Really dumb.....

Suggest you not read the novel, but see the movie (1988) instead. The movie is just as dumb, but Meg Tilly looked really good nude (or, maybe, at least her Body Double did....?!)

  7. I remember Hobgoblin being goofy, like one part the protagonist freaks out and starts yelling, "I am Brian Boru!" in a classroom. Good times.

As a whole, the novel is a horror version of "Mazes and Monsters."

  8. Goddamn you. Here I am just after midnight, on a blustery night in London, reading Ramsey Campbell's "Fine Frights" and you remind me of the beautiful place, Portland Oregon, in particular, Powell's........

I went there in 2005 to get a set of Langlitz motorcycle leathers made and came across this superb store. I grabbed a wad of Campbell, Lumley and Lovecraft, a huge chocolate brownie and pint of milk and spent a very enjoyable afternoon, immersed in horror and treading the streets of a gorgeous city. Had dinner at Cha Cha Cha's and bought some vintage clothes at The Buffalo Exchange. So envious, wish I was there now.........
