Everybody be sure to read Grady Hendrix's latest Bloody Books of Halloween review of the outrageous 1991 novel Wurm by Matthew J. Costello! My God, what a blast it sounds like. Anyway Costello's got some other excellently skeletal '80s and early '90s paperback covers as well:
I've read all of the Costello books you feature, save for SLEEP TIGHT. Of the bunch, I would say that WURM is probably the best of the bunch (and had a less satisfying sequel published some time later). DARKBORN and MIDSUMMER aren't too far behind, though. Some of the better-written pbos from the late '80 / early '90s horror boom.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Read a couple myself (SLEEP TIGHT, DARKBORN, BENEATH STILL WATERS...) and enjoyed them. He still writes today, VACATION being one of his latests.
ReplyDeleteHuh. Costello and Rick Hautala must be pretty good buddies. I have a copy of Wurm over on the shelf; read a chapter or two out of it a decade ago but it never sank its hooks. Eh, I'll get back to it, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteI do love the Wurm cover art but the mash-up of the book itself sounds like too much of a time waster, just to register a few guffaws, when there are so many good books out there to read-and so little time left as I get on in years.
ReplyDeleteCostello and Hautala were friends. They collaborated on more than one book. The last collaboration, Star Road, was published earlier this year. (Rick died in March 2013.)

I'm a huge fan of Costello and "Wurm" is easily my least favorite of his books that I've read. "Midsummer" is very similar and much better.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone remember that Costello wrote the novelization of "The 7th Guest," that PC Game from the 90s? I loved that game.
ReplyDeleteI not only remember it, but actually read it. This far down the road, though, I don't remember a thing about it, but oddly I can still picture what the dustjacket art looked like.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys--but I don't think I've even ever seen one of Costello's books in my USB searches!
ReplyDeleteHey thanks for all the kind words about my horrrors....from the past! Matt
