The late George Ziel was a paperback cover artist extraordinaire. I can't get enough of his style, and his work for the Gothic romance craze of the late 1960s and early '70s has become nearly iconic. Here are some dark, lovely Gothic ladies to enjoy, and for more about Ziel the man and the artist, be sure to visit Lynn Munroe Books, Unobtanium 13, and The Midnight Room.

ReplyDeleteVery funny to me that Lost Ecstasy gets the Gothic Treatment. It's a romance novel set in the American West and has ZERO Gothic elements.
ReplyDeleteI have that edition of WAX and every other Ethel Lina White book reprinted by Paperback Library Gothic series. Now her books are Gothics. My favorite of this lot is APPLESHAW. That could be a cover for a Gold Medal PBO.
Makes you wonder who was the model he used.
ReplyDeleteWith covers like these I would gladly give gothic romances a try. Fantastic artwork.
