RIP: Rick Hautala

Sad and shocking: I can't believe we've lost yet another horror fiction writer! Prolific Maine author Rick Hautala died of a heart attack today; he was 64.

  1. I purchased booth Moondeath and Night Stone due to the reviews on this blog, and barely just got done reading the complete Little Brothers for my Kindle. This is very sad news, as I had seen his name for years in the horror section but never actually read him until now. He will not be forgotten.

  2. First James, now Rick? They say things come in threes, but I really hope there are no more obits this week.

    Sad news for fans everywhere.

  3. Actually, Bob, this *is* the third; HORROR SHOW mag editor David B. Silva died a week or two ago...

  5. Steve Bissette had some kind words about Hautala on his Facebook feed and noted that he'll be posting to his Myrant blog about Hautala, who was a friend, in a few days, if anyone's interested.

  6. Will - I was sad when I saw that James Herbert had passed, but not really surprised because I knew he was getting up there in years & had been in poor health for many of the past few years.
But, Rick Hautala's death was a real shock.
I was a really big fan of his work back in the day. With my appreciation of his novels beginning with his first MOONDEATH, which I purchased at my college bookstore on my very first day of school way back in the autumn of 1980.
I loved that werewolf classic & made it a point to buy all of his follow up books as they were published throughout the '80s.
Unfortunately, with the demise of the paperback originals market, I wasn't able to keep up with Rick's work as I would have liked to, but with his unfortunate passing, I'm going to make it a point to try to catch up with his later work a bit.
    His talent will be missed.
