Abracadabra by Stephen Gresham (1988): Down the Rabbit Hole

One of Zebra's finest, no? What else could one possibly say about it? I'm not gonna even try.

  2. Just when I thought I'd seen every possible permutation of the innocent and the macabre (creepy kid, clown, stroller, teddy bear, etc), along comes this. NOW I've seen it all.

  3. Wow, I kind've like it and will probably give it a try. And then, like with many of the old Zebra books I have bought these last few months I will probaby set it down afterward and be like 'what was I thinking?'

  4. There comes a point when you gotta ask: "What were they thinking?!"

  5. Holy shit! I've never even seen that one before! That one may just top "skeleton with a banjo"!

I hate to admit it though, but I'd probably buy the damn thing just for the cover, so maybe they had something there...

  6. I just read this one last year, and I thought it was...kinda cute/sweet (especially when compared to the cover). There was a nicely realized relationship between the little girl magician and her grandfather and his magician circle. The cover is unforgivable. The book--not bad.

  7. I *have* heard that Gresham's books didn't deserve their covers...
